The Estate Gallery is a new approach, located in the heart of Vancouver's heady and intoxicating real estate market. Our mandate is to show and sell art which responds to Vancouver's concerns with housing, speculation, false promises and economic inequality.
We show work that critically and aesthetically situates itself in a changing contemporary landscape. Perched on the treacherous bedrock of post-gallery spaces, overlooking the rising waters of a real estate crisis, we offer a space defined by risk, but a space nonetheless.
The gallery exists already in the coming post- real estate world, having no definite location and a variable footprint. We oppose the practice of purchasing space, and believe renting is a deal with the devil. Our operations are organized online; art is shown on our (portable) gold real estate sign.
We are a commercial gallery. We feel that Vancouver's non-profit contemporary art context has betrayed its promise. Both commercial and non-profit galleries have been playing it safe. Artist-run centres have become too concerned with their own preservation as institutions, which has led to a narrowing of opportunities, especially for emerging artists and for artists working outside of dominant aesthetic and critical modalities. These artists could often be better served by engaging directly with commercial interests. We believe that the survival of Vancouver's contemporary artists demands new approaches.
We are currently accepting proposals for early 09. Guidelines are here.
